Emsland

The waters in the Emsland flow like blue ribbons through green expanses dotted with woods and moors. The Ems, the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the Haren-Rütenbrock Canal und coastal canals with their connection to the North Sea und the network of waterways in Holland are ideal areas for leisurely skippers. Lively places such as Lingen and Meppen with their market squares invite you to drop anchor or to visit the maritime towns of Haren or Papenberg where the Meyer Werft is located.

Canoeists find refuge on the Ems River on the old arms of the Ems as well as on the renatured Hase. Quiet areas by the shores and excellent water quality create a good habitat for beavers, kingfishers and salmon. People keen on discovering the Emsland area should get on a bicycle and head over to the baroque palace at Clemenswerth, the Emsland Moormuseum where the world’s largest steam plough is housed, the Emsflower Discovery Centre that produces over half a billion plants per year or the “Korn”(schnaps) distilleries which are rich in tradition.

The bathing lakes of the area guarantee even more fun: sailing, surfing, skin diving and waterskiing. If the weather’s not great and rain is in the air, the family friendly certified fun pools with impressive sauna landscapes are an enticing option.
